Full-Yard and Backyard Projects
Most of our work is one of two kinds of project. The first is full-yard landscaping on a new home, where the lot is bare and everything has to be planned at once: grading and drainage, the patio and pathways, retaining walls wherever the grade changes, a deck off the back door, the fence, and then sod, beds and trees. The second is a backyard renovation on an established property, where an old rotting deck, a sunken driveway or a failing retaining wall comes out and the space is reworked around how you actually use it: a dining area, a fire pit, room for the kids and pets, privacy from the neighbours.
Either way the yard is designed as one landscape. Custom landscaping means the paving stone pattern, the wall block, the deck material and the planting are chosen to work together and to suit the house, and planning the whole yard first is what keeps one feature from having to be removed later to make room for another. Complete landscape design-build projects run through one team from the first drawing to the finished yard, built by experienced journeyman crews with premium materials. Luxury landscaping, to us, is a yard that still looks right in twenty years.
How a Project Runs
Estimate. Contact us to book a free estimate. Our estimator meets you on site, walks the space, talks through your ideas and takes measurements, and you receive an itemized estimate by email. Estimates are valid for 30 days.
Design. Where a project involves several features, changes in elevation or a complete backyard transformation, a landscape design comes first, so drainage, hardscape, structures and planting are planned as one space.
Booking. When you are ready to go ahead we schedule the work and give you an anticipated start week. A 50% deposit is required on jobs that need materials purchased.
Site walkthrough. Before construction starts, your dedicated Project Manager walks the site with you: reviewing every line item of the estimate and where it goes, re-measuring, confirming product styles, patterns and colours, and sorting out delivery, access and parking.
Build. Your yard is the only priority of the crew assigned to it, and that crew stays on your job until it is done. Your Project Manager is your point of contact throughout.
Final walkthrough. You and your Project Manager go over the whole project together and address any last details, then the final payment is made and you start enjoying the yard.

Timelines and Booking
Our construction crews build from spring until winter sets in. Spring and early summer are the busiest time of year for estimates, because most people want the yard finished before the hot months, so those weeks book up quickly. Fall is one of the best times to start: you are not using the yard as much, our estimators are available for consultations, and the project is either finished before winter or booked for an early spring start so it is ready on the first warm day. Booking in the fall also locks in current material pricing before suppliers raise prices for the new year. Fall is also a good time to lay sod, since it goes dormant over winter and establishes with the spring melt.
Warranty
Every hardscape project carries our 2-year hassle-free warranty. Patios and pathways are covered against major shifting or settling beyond 1 inch, retaining walls and stairs against major heaving or sinking, and decks, fences, pergolas, privacy screens and arbors against major structural defects. We build drainage into all major walls. Natural weathering of wood, and plants, trees and sod, sit outside the warranty. Do I need a landscape design before starting construction?
Not every landscaping project requires a formal landscape design, but having a clear plan becomes increasingly important as the size and complexity of the project grows.
For projects involving multiple features, changes in elevation, drainage, retaining walls or a complete backyard transformation, planning the entire space first can help ensure that each element works together.
A good landscape plan considers how you want to use the property, traffic flow, drainage, materials, planting, future maintenance and how individual features such as patios, decks and gardens connect.
What should I do first when planning a complete backyard renovation?
Start by thinking about how you want to use the space rather than choosing individual landscaping features first.
Consider whether you want areas for entertaining, dining, children, pets, gardening, privacy or simply relaxing outdoors. It’s also important to identify existing problems such as poor drainage, slopes, erosion or areas of the yard that aren’t currently usable.
From there, a landscaping contractor can assess the property and determine the appropriate combination of grading, hardscaping, structures and planting. Planning the project as one complete landscape can also help prevent situations where one feature has to be removed or changed later to accommodate another.
When should I book to have work done next season?
Book in the fall. Do I need a City of Calgary permit for a deck, fence or retaining wall?
It depends on size and location. In Calgary an uncovered deck generally needs a building permit when its surface is more than 0.6 metres (2 feet) above grade. Retaining walls 1.2 metres (4 feet) or higher generally require permits and may require engineering. Most standard residential fences within the City’s height limits (1.2 metres in the front yard, 2.0 metres elsewhere) do not need a building permit. The property owner is responsible for any permit or easement a project requires, and we help with the process; ask your estimator or Project Manager. Do you handle grading and drainage as part of the build?
Yes. Yard grading, levelling and drainage are part of our landscape construction work, and on a full-yard project they are planned before anything is built on top. Every paving stone installation is graded so water runs off the surface, and we build drainage into all major retaining walls.
What warranty comes with the work?
A 2-year hassle-free warranty on all hardscape projects: major shifting or settling of patios and pathways, major heaving or sinking of retaining walls and stairs, and major structural defects in decks, fences, pergolas, privacy screens and arbors.
