All natural wood dries after it is installed. Cedar and pressure-treated lumber will crack, shrink or twist to some degree as they dry and weather, which is normal and outside the warranty. Composite and vinyl skip the staining cycle, which is why a Tuscany homeowner had us replace a front porch with composite decking and beige aluminum railings: there is something to be said for never having to paint again.
Design and Build Process
A deck starts with a free estimate: our estimator meets you on site, walks the space, talks through how you want to use the deck and takes measurements, and you receive an itemized estimate by email, valid for 30 days. Because a deck usually meets a patio, a pergola or a retaining wall, the deck is drawn as part of the landscape design, so levels, footings and drainage are worked out together, whether it steps down to a paving stone patio or carries a pergola overhead. When you go ahead we schedule the build and give you an anticipated start week; a 50% deposit is required on jobs that need materials purchased. Before construction, your dedicated Project Manager walks the site with you to review every line item, re-measure, confirm decking and railing choices and colours, and sort out delivery and access. The crew assigned to your deck stays on it until it is done, and a final walkthrough with your Project Manager closes the job.
Deck Permits in Calgary
In Calgary, a building permit is generally required for an uncovered deck when the deck surface is more than 0.6 metres (2 feet) above grade at any point. Covered decks, and certain additions or modifications to existing decks, may also require permits. A development permit may be required depending on where the deck sits on the property and how close it is to property lines, and any electrical or plumbing work built into the project may need trade permits. Requirements vary by project and are confirmed before construction begins. Under our terms the property owner is responsible for obtaining permits or easements, and we help with the process; ask your estimator or Project Manager.
Railings, Stairs and Privacy
Railings set the look of a deck as much as the boards do. We build aluminum railings with aluminum spindles, aluminum railings with glass panels to keep the view open, and aluminum frames with cedar and lattice inserts where you want privacy and something for a clematis to climb. Stairs are built with boxed-in risers and the deck is skirted so nothing shows underneath. For decks that sit close to a neighbour or a second-storey window, a privacy lattice or pergola built into the deck blocks the sightline; in Rocky Ridge a pressure-treated deck and privacy lattice with aluminum spindles made the most of a newer community’s small lot, and in Aspen a cedar deck with privacy lattice and a decorative pergola became the dining room of the yard.

All woodwork, including decks, is covered against major structural defects for 2 years under our hassle-free warranty. Natural weathering is normal and sits outside the warranty: pressure-treated wood and composite fade, cedar silvers, and regular maintenance and staining are the homeowner’s responsibility.
